1817 Federal Style Convex Mirror

1817 Federal Style Convex Mirror

$6,500.00

American Federal Style wall mirror dating to 1817. The giltwood frame is crested by an eagle perched upon a pedestal, and finishes below with an ornamental Acanthus carving. In between, its rim is set with 19 balls surrounding the convex circular mirror. The number of balls set around the edge represent the number of states in the burgeoning nation, dating this piece to the brief period of a 19-state America.

There had not been a new state for several years when Indiana was admitted in late 1816 under President Madison. But another state was added the next year (under the new Monroe administration), and again for several years to come, making the 19th state a sort of starting point for the country's rapid expansion in the rest of the century, and making this piece commemorative of that fleeting and pivotal moment.

The use of an eagle as an emblem of authority dates back to ancient Rome, and has been employed in America since the 1780s. The dynamic and highly stylized American Eagle in this piece embodies the strength and boldness beginning to solidify in the nation at this moment, after the War of 1812.

Mirrors of this type were used in the dining hall, allowing the butler to see all at a glance without constantly scanning the table.
