Item: Jane Avril by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
This piece came to Kipper in sheds, and was beautifully restored back to life with care onto transfer paper, keeping the integrity of the piece in tact.
Originally created in 1899, this poster was one of many created by Toulouse-Lautrec of friend and French cabaret performer, Jane Avril. This was the last of the series, and features Avril with arms raised theatrically as a snake coils around her black dress. Her twisted body is likely an homage to her performances, during which poet Arthur Symons recalls her being quite the contortionist.
The image shows an inscription reading "H. Stern, Paris" on the margin, likely associated with the historical Parisian printing firm known for producing works by artists like Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
The symbol shown is the distinctive monogram stamp (HGL ligature) used by Toulouse-Lautrec. It was frequently incorporated into his posters, lithographs, and drawings.
